Though Latur was an apt location for a film like Shanghai, the shoot had its share of hindrances and obstacles when it came to the hotels and accommodation facilities. A source said, “The crew — cast members
Emraan Hashmi,
Abhay Deol, Prosenjit Chatterjee and director Dibakar Banerjee — had a tough time finding the right hotels. The available ‘inns’ either lacked basic amenities or did not have air-conditioners, a prerequisite a film unit insists on.”To play safe Dibakar made his unit dash to the locations at least three weeks before the actual shoot.
Confirming the incident the director said, “My film involved stars and I did not want to compromise on anything. I am used to the rough life but my actors aren’t. My production controller took charge and got the hotel rooms done up. They put up drapes, arranged for lights and other amenities to make it as conducive as possible. I wanted the rooms to be spick-and-span, so that the actors felt comfortable after a hard day’s shoot.”
He laughs, adding, “I just cannot forget the shower in Emraan’s bathroom. It was in complete disrepair. He kept pulling my leg saying, ‘This is the way to degrade me.’ It was so funny.” Interestingly, people did not recognise Emraan Hashmi. Since the actor was in his character’s get up for the most part, people did not know it was him. But once they knew, they would not leave him. “To deploy the crowd, we would park his car and van away from the sets. And believe me, we really succeeded in avoiding the crowd,” Dibakar said.
